On your character selection screen, you will have an option to delete a character near your login button. A character in a clan cannot be deleted, so make sure you drop them from any clan they might be in. A level 1 character will be deleted instantly, anything else will take a few days. This ensures you don't delete it and change your mind about it later.

Ah! The clan member thing is what was stopping me. Can't believe I missed that.
